Chronology of cameras Shew
The Shew Xit is an evolution of the Eclipse camera. It was introduced in 1894, and was made in several configurations including polished mahogany, black or leather covered, and also custom on demand, often with aluminum fittings. The uncommon Focal Plane Xit with focal plane shutter was made from around 1901, with an Anschutz focal plane shutter which would be improved by 1905. This last model was called 'Model A' and the earlier version then called 'Model B'.
This specimen is made of polished mahogany with aluminum fittings, for 6 ½ x 4 ¾ inches glass plates in double wooden dark slides. The focal plane shutter is the early Anschutz with tension control (10 steps) and variable slit (7 steps controlled on the inside) and delivering speeds in the range 1/25 to 1/1200 (Mod. B). The lens is a Staeble Doppel-Anastigmat Polyplast with focal length of 19.5 cm and maximum aperture of 6.3, with fixed focus. There are two focusing positions on the side wings and the front standard has cross and rising movement. Originally the camera had a mirror viewfinder on the front standard but was substituted by a sports wireframe.
